You know that piece of clothing or piece of jewellery.
It’s sitting in the back of your wardrobe gathering dust.
You really like it – it’s why you bought it, right – but you think it’s not you, that people will look at you if you wear it and judge you.
And so you leave it in the back of the wardrobe.
This was my challenge number 3 in pushing myself outside my comfort zone weekly challenge to see what I’m capable of…
Wearing these big purple earrings out in public. Yeah baby!!
I’d worn them in the house and I’ve previously posted a photo (above) of myself wearing them on socials (it’s all about little steps outside our comfort zone).
But I hadn’t worn them outside the front door for almost 15 years.
I thought they were too big, too purple, too out there and that I’d look stupid wearing them. I worried I would stand out, that people would look at me and that ultimately, they would judge me in an unfavourable light.
And people did look when I went to the mall.
As I was getting my nails done, the girls talked amongst themselves in a language I couldn’t understand and then they looked at me and smiled.
My brain conjured up all the worst possible things they could be thinking.
But I got back to the car without an altercation and without the world ending.
The question I asked myself was… why am I making other people’s opinions of me more important than my own opinions of myself?
It’s one to ponder.
Bottom line – I liked the earrings, I thought they looked pretty good so why not wear the darn things?
And equally importantly – who flippin cares what other’s think? They aren’t you and they won’t think the same (that’s just how the world works). As many wise people say, it’s not your business what other people think of you.
The only thing that’s stopping you from being you, from being the person you want to be, is YOU.
So what’s that piece of clothing or jewellery in the back of the wardrobe you’d like to wear but you’ve been too scared to?
Take it out, have a look at it and ask yourself if your fears are true. Be brave, face the fear and wear the piece. See what happens.
