Opportunities and regret

I recently heard a woman talking on the radio – she was urging listeners to take the opportunities presented to them.

Don’t make excuses, she said.

Don’t buy into your fears or doubts, she said.

Don’t worry about the future or consequences of saying yes, she said.

And then she gave an example.

She had always wanted to go horse riding but had always been too scared to try it.

One day, on holiday, she had the opportunity to give horse riding a try.

She ummed and ahhed about it. Felt the fear and told herself she couldn’t afford it.

In the end, after much internal angst, she finally thought stuff the money, took the risk and decided to go horse riding – and had the time of her life.

Not long later, she had to have surgery. Unfortunately, as a result, she was unable to ride a horse ever again.

If she had said no to the opportunity to go horse riding, she told the listeners, she would have regretted it for the rest of her life.

Instead, because she said yes, she said it was one of her greatest memories.

And so, she urged, always take the opportunity.

Not just because you might regret it if you don’t but because you don’t know what other opportunities or happiness it might lead to or how you might grow.

She is right.

I don’t know who she was or why she was on the radio but she spoke to me.

Life is precious. Let’s walk with our eyes awake and arms open wide.
