Challenge number 5 – try a food you’ve never tried before

Jackfruit!

That was my challenge a few weeks ago (sorry I’ve been a bit tardy on sharing this – I blame wedding mayhem).

The idea is I’m challenging myself to do things that pushes me outside my comfort zone. This is about taking conscious actions to improve awareness of how we talk to ourselves, to challenge our self-limiting beliefs, embrace the discomfort of stepping outside our comfort zone and seeing what is possible on the other side.

So this challenge was all about trying a food I’d never tried before.

It can be easy to stay eating the same old stuff that we’re used to and not venture into the world of the culinary unknown (which, if you’re not a foodie or an adventurous eater, we will often interpret as outside our comfort zone).

It’s easy to think of food in terms of black and white – I like this, I don’t like this – and then let that dictate our menu choices and also define who we are. (As an example, maybe you don’t like the concept of raw fish – which you haven’t tried – so you don’t go traveling in Asia even though you really like the idea…)

With these weekly challenges of stepping outside my comfort zone, this challenge aimed to explore my thinking around food and open myself up to something new and a new experience.

I chose jackfruit because I’ve seen this meat substitute mentioned quite a bit recently and I was interested to know what it tasted like and whether it was as big a deal as it’s made out to be. I had no idea whether I would like it or not. I didn’t even know what to expect.

But the bottom line is – you don’t know if you don’t try. (Or in other words, you can’t judge a book if you haven’t read it).

Because how do you know you’re not going to like something if you haven’t tried it?

How do you know you’ll have a bad experience if you haven’t dipped your toe in the water to see what happens?

How do you know something amazing won’t happen if you’re too quick to judge and don’t give it a second thought?

You don’t know – because sorry folks we don’t have crystal balls that can predict the future.

Which is why shimmying past our comfort zone is a good thing – yes it takes us out of that nice comfy seat (you know the one, with all the plush cushions next to the fire and the steaming mug of hot chocolate and the nice book of nursery rhymes) but it moves us not into an area of terrifying monsters but into an area where growth, development, possibility and magic exist.

And who couldn’t do with a bit of magic in their life?

This is what I mean by conscious action, by being conscious of taking little steps outside your comfort zone to raise awareness of what your inner chatter is telling you and how it might be holding you back or keeping you stuck. And then witnessing how you thrive and how much stronger you actually are when you do take those hesitant steps outside your comfort zone.

The world is your oyster (see what I did there 🤦‍♀️) and on the other side of your comfort zone is possibility. It’s waiting for you.

And you might just find a new favourite food which might just change your life!

PS – Is there some challenge you’ve been dreaming about which requires stepping outside your comfort zone but you’ve got doubts and fears and don’t know if you’re good enough to attempt it? That’s totally normal. Let’s talk if you want to move forward.

PPS – If you know someone who might benefit from coaching or this blog, then please share!

  1. For someone who has certain tastes in food, I am hugely impressed you actually chowed that piece down.  How did the curry go? If it is a meat substitute, did it tick all your boxes? Will you use it again?

    • Well it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting, although I don’t really know what I was expecting. The curry was excellent and the left over I turned into a soup which was also very tasty. I will definitely eat it again and might even search it out on menus.
